Using specific chemical acids will in minutes, lift away dead cells and trigger a lovely chain reaction. As that top most layer is shed, signals are sent to the living cells below to multiply and move up, to increase collagen production and enhance the hyaluronic acid to act younger and produce more. Different acid combinations are used to address different skin conditions or concerns.

Pre-Procedure Care

ONE WEEK BEFORE YOUR PEEL

Avoid these products and/or procedures for one entire week prior to your chemical peel:

  • Electrolysis
  • Waxing
  • Depilatory Creams
  • Laser Hair Removal
  • Sun Exposure
  • Retin-A, Renova, Differin (Adapalene 0.1%), Tazorac or any product containing Retinol.

TWO TO THREE DAYS BEFORE YOUR PEEL

Stop using:

  • Any products containing AHA or BHA, or benzoyl peroxide
  • Any exfoliating products that may be drying or irritating

Post-Procedure Care

It is crucial to the health of your skin and the success of your peel that these guidelines be followed:

  • If Retinoic Acid is used as part of your treatment, your skin will have a light yellow tinge immediately after the procedure. This is temporary and will fade in 1 to 2 hours. It is recommended to wait until the evening to wash your face, however if you should choose to wash it sooner, please wait until after the yellow tinge completely disappears (1-2 hours).
  • It is imperative that you use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and avoid direct sunlight for at least 1 week.
  • Your skin may be more red than usual for 2-3 days. Please avoid strenuous exercise during this time.
  • Approximately 48 hours after the treatment, your skin will start to peel. This peeling will generally last 2 to 5 days. DO NOT PICK OR PULL THE SKIN.
  • When washing your face, do not scrub. Use a gentle cleanser.
  • Apply a light moisturizer as often as needed to relieve dryness and tightness.
  • Do not have any other facial treatments for a least one week after your peel.
  • You may resume the regular use of Retin-A, alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), or bleaching creams only after the peeling process is complete.

FAQ

You are invited to find our up to date answers to some of your questions about services offered at AK Care. We will be happy to meet with you in person for more specific inquiries.

What do chemical peels do?

Chemical peeling agents resurface the skin by inducing a controlled wound and thus removing superficial layers of the skin. As a result, chemical peels promote the growth of a new healthy top skin layer and improve skin problems like hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture and skin impurities.

Is there downtime?

After a medium or deep peel, you will have downtime. A deep chemical peel requires recuperation at home for 2 to 3 weeks.

When will my skin start to peel and for how long?

Peeling will generally start 48-72 hours after your treatment and can last 2-5 days. It is very important not to pick off peeling skin; peeling is minimal and easily controlled with moisturizer. Premature peeling of the skin will result in dry, cracked, raw skin that may develop into hyperpigmentation.

When will I see the results?

Once your skin heals, you will see the results. Healing time ranges from 1 day for a refreshing or lunchtime peel to 14 days or longer for a deep peel. To get the results you seek from a refreshing peel or lunchtime peel, you may need to have 3 to 5 peels.

How long will the results last?

Most results are not permanent because our skin continues to age. If you have lots of sun-damaged skin or precancerous skin growths called AKs, you will likely continue to see new spots and growths on your skin.

Are there any restrictions of activities after the chemical peel?

We recommend avoiding heavy sweating for the first few days after the peel. Normal activities may be resumed immediately after the peel. Its advisable to keep sun exposure to a minimum when skin is peeling. SPF is a required daily.
