These are a minimally invasive injections that targets reversibly relaxing the activities of specific muscles in the face by the use of neurotoxins. This prevents the formation of wrinkles and fine lines such as frown lines which are the vertical lines that appear between your eyebrows, forming facial expressions such as frowning and squinting or crow’s feet lines that appear on the sides of eyes. Deep frown lines can make your face expression appear to be unhappy and unwelcoming. Lines can appear at a younger age, but can also worsen with aging. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and cannot spring back into place as easily with movement of the facial muscles.

Other factors can affect the appearance of wrinkles such as smoking, sun exposure, genetics and nutrition.

The effect of this treatment usually lasts several months ranging from 2-5 months and is variable in each person. Therefore, repeated injections are recommended to maintain its effectiveness.

Pre-Procedure Care

  • Avoid aspirin,vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo, Evening primrose oil, garlic, feverfew, and ginseng for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and alcohol for 2 days.
  • If possible, come to your appointment with a cleanly washed face.

Post-Procedure Care

  • Do not massage the treated areas on the day of treatment.
  • Avoid lying down for 4 hours immediately after treatment.
  • Avoid applying heat to the treated area on the day of treatment. This includes activities that cause facial flushing including consuming alcohol, hot tub or sauna use, exercising, and tanning.
  • Gently apply a cool compressor wrapped ice pack to the treated areas for 15 minutes every few hours as needed to reduce discomfort, swelling, or bruising up to 24-48 hours after treatment.
  • If bruising occurs, it typically resolves within 7–10 days. Oral consumption and/or topical application of Arnica Montana may help to reduce bruising and swelling.

How is it used?

Is it painful?

The injection is easily done without numbing. It is less painful than an injection of a vaccine.

What is it used for?

It is used for the treatment of upper facial wrinkles, including forehead, sides of eyes, and frown lines. It has several other uses which varies for each person.

How does it work?

Local muscle weakness is the expected action of this medicine by working on nerve endings connected to the target muscles.

Does it work for everyone?

There are several reasons for excessive sweating. Botox is effective in cases called Primary Localaized Hyperhidrosis which means there is no other conditions causing sweating. The most common conditions are endocrine dysfunction like thyroid gland hyperactivity and diabetes, menopause, severe anxiety, some infections or lymphoma.

Can everyone use it?

Hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin type A or to any ingredients, the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and any muscle disorders in other parts of body, including myasthenia gravis, Eaton Lambert Syndrome or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are reasons not to use it. It is not recommended during pregnancy and breast-feeding, or below 18 years old.

What do you expect after injection?

No changes will be seen immediately after injection except for a few minutes of redness, burning/stinging/ pain at the injection site. Bruising at the injection site may be seen which is very minor in most cases.

How long does the effect last?

It usually lasts for about 3 months but it varies in different people and sites of injection.

Are there any serious side effects?

Make sure you inform your doctor of any medical problems or medications you take. Seek immediate medical attention if swallowing, speech or respiratory problems arise. The most common side effect is weakness of undesired muscles leading to features like reduced strength of muscles of treated area like hands, feet or drooping of eyebrows or eyelids.These are not permanent and can usually be managed at the follow-up session. As with all biologic products, an anaphylactic reaction may occur.

How much product do I need?

It varies in different people depending on their age, sex, sun exposure and site of injection.

Is there a follow-up needed?

It is highly recommended you follow up after 2 weeks to make sure the result is optimum. There may be touch-ups needed at this time.

How do I get charged?

You will pay by number of units used. If you need more injections at your follow-up, you will pay according to the number of units used at that time.
