Belkyra™, also known as Kybella, is an injectable drug used to reduce the fat in the submental area, also known as the area beneath the chin. Kybella/Belkyra™ is an FDA and Health Canada approved cosmetic injection. This non-surgical treatment uses deoxycholic acid – a naturally occurring substance found in the body – to destroy the membranes of fat cells, creating a beautifully contoured silhouette below the chin.

The results of Belkyra™ are not immediate. At your first treatment visit you will receive a series of injections in the submental area. At the time of injection and for several days following the injections you will have swelling in the submental area. Belkyra™ will gradually over the course of the next month following your injection cause the fat cells to diminish in the area treated. If needed, another treatment may be performed at one month or later after your initial treatment. A series of treatments may be necessary to achieve optimal results and these will occur at no sooner than the one month interval. Dr Khakshaee will decide the appropriate number of treatment sessions and the amount of Belkyra™ you will need at each session.

Before embarking on any treatments, AK Care recommends to have a one to one consult with Dr. AK or our aesthetician. During this session skin and facial assessment will be done. Mutual decision is made as to what treatments can be done. As you all may know, medical and cosmetic skin care is overlooked in lots of people.

Home regimen remedies and professional treatments are routinely needed based on your skin type, colour, ageing and expectation. We ensure that all our patient stay happy and satisfied in their skin.

Pre-Procedure Care

  • You may not be treated if you are pregnant or nursing, have difficulty swallowing, nerve injury or weakness in the lower face, or an infection in the area.
  • Inform your medical provider if you are on blood thinners or have had procedures or surgery of your lower face or neck or allergy to lidocaine or epinephrine.
  • Avoid aspirin for 10 days, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), other non-steroidal medications and Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, and fish oil supplements for 5 days prior to the procedure, because these medications will make you more likely to bruise. To avoid possible discomfort, you may take 1g of acetaminophen (i.e. Tylenol) or NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen) one hour prior to your scheduled appointment.
  • Plan your procedure so that you can have 4 full days before returning to work or important social engagements.
  • Have Advil and an antihistamine available at home for discomfort and itching that may result from the procedure.

Post-Procedure Care

  • After your treatment, you should expect swelling and redness. You may also experience bruising, pain, numbness, and induration. This will normally last less than 5 days, and for some patients may last up to 14 days. If symptoms continue beyond 10 days or if other reactions occur, please contact the office.
  • You may elect to ice the area post treatment but must do so very carefully. Use an ice pack with the fabric side against the skin, or wrap a soft plastic ice pack in a wet thin towel. Apply the ice pack approximately 15 seconds on, and 15 seconds off. Icing too vigorously can cause frostbite and scarring. You may apply a cold compress to the area for 20 minutes per hour, and you may do this hourly for up to 3 days.
  • Do not participate in strenuous activity for 3 days following treatment.
  • Sleep with your head elevated on at least 2 and preferably 3 pillows.
  • Do not scratch, pick or traumatize the area in any way. Do not massage or manipulate the injection site.
  • You may apply your normal skin care regimen and sunscreen normally.

How many treatments will I need?

The improvement of your chin profile will gradually improve over a number of treatment sessions customized by your health care provider. Typically, 2-4 treatments are recommended which are administered at 4-6 week intervals. Up to 6 treatments may be administered.

When will I see results?

Your appearance will gradually improve with each treatment session. Many people see visible improvements in just 2-4 treatments. After the injection, the process of eliminating the fat cells occurs over the next 4 weeks. Optimum results will be seen 4-6 weeks after your treatment.

Is it permanent?

Yes! Once your goals are achieved, re-treatment is not expected. The fat cells are permanently removed from your body and you cannot produce more fat cells. Should you gain weight, your existing fat cells can increase in size; however, so a healthy lifestyle is recommended to maintain optimal results.

How effective is it?

Almost 80% of people treated with Belkyra reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and chin. People reported improvement in their self perception, including feeling happier and younger, based on their chin profile.

How do I know if Belkyra is right for me?

Belkyra might be right for you if:

  • You’re bothered by fullness under your chin.
  • You don’t want to get surgery.
  • You eat well and exercise, but the fullness under your chin doesn’t go away

How is Belkyra administered?

Belkyra is administered through a series of injections into the area under your chin. Treatment is typically 15-20 minutes.

Is there downtime?

For most people, downtime is minimal and occurs most commonly after the first treatment session. Side effects are usually less severe with subsequent treatments. Swelling and bruising are very common; however,  keep in mind your social plans when scheduling your treatments.
